M was all fired up yesterday when I got him set up with an MSN account. He chose the name wedge_dude@hotmail.com which he found eminently funny. We sat next to each other and chatted away through our computers. He balked at my writing English and I had to switch to Norwegian to keep things moving. He loves the quacking sounds Adium makes and is particularly thrilled when he gets “long words”.
It is too bad that the schools can’t find the resources and figure out a way to use this kind of technology for teaching reading and writing, because all the kids would probably be experts within a couple of weeks. The language they use would not, however, resemble the traditional language they learn at school. That would be too slow for chat and spelling is a non-issue in the IM world.
Anyway, I’ll keep throwing in some English to see if I can improve his reading skills without revealing that I am trying to educate him.
M has his local cousins and one of his friends on his contact list and spent large parts of the day today - 12-Nov-2006 - chatting. His intensity and style were so cute and amusing to me I decided to film it.
He’s been at me, his cousins, and his friend all day and his, by far, most common message is:
(The “smiley” is an expression of anger and “svar” means answer.)
I should also mention that A (amanda_edderkopp@hotmail.com) and V (vodegaard@hotmail.com) are also chatting these days. They were just as excited about it as M.
