Bergens Tidende has published some nice navigable panorama views of the churches of Bergen. Mom and Dad might recognize the picture above - it’s from Mariakirken where Amanda was christened.
The quality of the panoramas is stunning. Spend some time using the various functionality like zooming and panning. It’s fun to explore.
Mariakirken is a beautiful building. I am happy to be able to see it closely each day I ride my bike to and from work, and it stands out on the Bergen skyline.
Mariakirken is Bergens oldest existing building and it is estimated that it was completed in 1150. Experts guess building probably started around 1000, based on some of the details on the ornamentation.
The church is mostly in Roman style, but the right side of the choir (including, presumably the pulpit) is in Gothic style. (Thanks to New York Carver for help on the architectural terms.
The church belonged to the German Hansa merchants so is more nicely appointed than the other churches in Bergen. The pulpit and altar were gifts from the merchants of Bryggen in 1677 and are considered some of the finest baroque work to be found in Norway.
